What is a Herniated Disc?

Discs are the rubbery cushions between the bones of your spine. These discs are softer in the center with a stronger membrane surrounding them. Herniated discs occur when there is a tear in the exterior that allows the softer cushioning to bulge through.

Symptoms will vary from one individual to the next. Some fortunate individuals will experience no symptoms. Among those that do, pain in the nerves surrounding the disc along with numbness or weakness in the body part the nerve serves is common.

There are many causes for bulging or herniated discs, including the aging process. As you age, your discs begin to lose water which increases the risk of tears forming along the exterior. Other problems include lifting heavy objects using back muscles rather than leg muscles or twisting and turning while lifting. On rare occasions, a slipped disc occurs in the aftermath of a blow to the back or some other form of trauma.

People who work in jobs that are physically demanding or who are obese experience greater risk of having disc problems. Of course, some people are simply genetically predisposed to develop disc problems as they age.

How Can a Modesto Chiropractor Help?

Prevention is always the best cure when it comes to pain. The best time to see a chiropractor about pain is before it actually begins.

Unfortunately, most people do not see a chiropractor until the pain has begun. Dr. Graham offers a variety of services that can help you find relief, both immediate and long-term, from the discomfort of your disc injury.

Graham Chiropractic Wellness Clinic offers a variety of services that can help you prevent or relieve your disc pain, including:

  • Nutrition services to promote healthy living and weight loss
  • Spinal decompression therapy
  • Working with you to develop an exercise routine that will strengthen your back and relieve your pain

More importantly, we work with you to identify activities that trigger your pain so you can avoid those activities while finding other activities you can do that will promote the strengthening of your back so that pain is a less common companion while you heal.
